Annotation | There is overwhelming evidence of the effectiveness of specialist stroke rehabilitation, but more limited evidence of the effectiveness of organised stroke care during the acute phase of stroke. Organised in-patient stroke care could be provided on discrete wards or by mobile teams during the acute phase of the stroke. In a randomised controlled trial involving 308 patients admitted to one of two hospitals in north-west England within 5 days of the onset of a clinically diagnosed stroke, the authors failed to demonstrate that early access to a mobile stroke team during acute phase of stroke conferred significant mortality or morbidity benefit compared with general ward-based care alone.
