Annotation | There are around 63,000 people with dementia in Scotland, of whom almost 30% live in care homes. Since Alzheimer Scotland's last report on long term care, " A positive choice: choosing long-stay care for a person with dementia" (1996), the balance of care has shifted more to care homes from long-stay hospital care. This report campaigns for better quality of care in care homes for people with dementia. It covers choosing and moving into a care home from the perspective of people with dementia and carers. The main aim of good dementia care is to achieve a sense of well-being. Also highlighted are other challenges for care home staff, including health, stimulation, spirituality and religion, and end-of-life care. Recommendations are made about treating people with dementia as individuals, more funding to train staff, recognition of the challenging role performed by care staff, and awareness raising to tackle negative attitudes towards people with dementia.
