Annotation | Although there has been much campaigning against unnecessary hysterectomies, the operation remains one of the most commonly performed in the world. In the UK, women have a one in five chance of having a hysterectomy by the age of 55. This short article article also states that 9 of every 10 hysterectomies are proformed for non-cancerous conditions, and in many, no disease is present. The author suggests that more robust longer term evidence on the outcomes of hysterectomy is required, for example on quality of life, sexual function, and pelvic pain. (RH). |
