Annotation | The family can have a major effect in enabling older people to age in place in their own homes, or to postpone or prevent institutionalisation altogether. 100 respondents aged 65+ in the Charlottestown area of Prince Edward Island, Canada were selected to participate in face-to-face interviews regarding their future housing preferences. Most of the respondents had no plans to move, and most wanted to remain living in close proximity to family. The results showed several linkages between family support currently provided and the older people's future housing preferences. Thus, programmes and services are required that will support older people and their family members to accommodate ageing in place. Further research is needed to understand more completely how family factors influence older people's housing preferences. (RH). |
