AnnotationThe authors take a multidisciplinary approach and use both medical and psycho-social models of depression. The medical model is used to identify symptoms, make diagnoses and work towards optimal treatment. Psycho-social perspectives provide insights into the scale and complexity of the condition and point to its social causes. Different levels of depression are identified in relation to, but distinct from, dementia, psychosis and anxiety, and suicide and self-harm. Practice examples are used throughout. The authors also consider the prevention of depression and how carers can be helped. (RH).
