AnnotationInterviews were conducted with around 70 women and some of their male partners. This qualitative research commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) explores how women plan financially for retirement, the decisions they take that affect their financial status in retirement, and the factors that influence or underpin them. The research was designed to further understanding of the factors affecting women's decisions concerning saving for later life, including partners, the household, and relationship breakdown. Problems with understanding the pensions system, mistrust of pensions, absence of paid employment, family influence and advice, and lack of certainty about the future of the State Pension are among other factors identified. The research provides clear evidence that women tend to see their families as their top priority. Policy-makers must find ways of dealing with encouraging women to accumulate pensions in their own right, and to increase the priority given to pensions for both men and women, particularly within families.
