Annotation | The incidence of depression among older people in care homes is far higher than among those in the community. The author reports that a huge effort needs to be made in improving detection and treatment. She cites research by Australia's Department of Health and Ageing, which highlights environmental factors, while UK mental health experts also point to the negative attitudes of general practitioners (GPs) and some care home staff in recognising and reacting to depression symptoms.
