Annotation | At the time of writing this article, Stephen Ladyman was a Minister at the Department of Health (DH) and involved in drawing up the 2005 Green Paper on adult social care, "Independence, well-being and choice" (Cm 6499). His commentary defends the Government's policies on the care of older people, and challenges some assumptions. Care homes do not solve all of the problems: he is more interested in older people maintaining their ability to control their lives and make choices. He refers to another publication, "The National Service Framework for long-term conditions", to illustrate that health and social services are becoming more integrated and working together. Other points touched on are choices in housing, registration of the social care workforce, telecare, and how personal care is funded. (RH). |
