Annotation | For too long, the promotion of mental well-being in later life has been overlooked in care budgets. The adult social care Green Paper, "Independence, well-being and choice" (Cm 6499; TSO, 2005) indicates that this may be about to change. The author reports on the issues and how they can be tackled. For example, a 3-year inquiry into mental health and well-being in later life is being carried out by Age Concern England (ACE) and the Mental Health Foundation, while Alisoun Milne of the Tizard Centre, University of Kent suggests that mental illness can be prevented at an earlier stage. Meanwhile, councils need to plan local amenities with older people in mind, while younger people need to take responsibility for their future emotional health. (RH). |
