AnnotationThe cost-effectiveness of an early discharge and rehabilitation service (EDRS) in Nottingham was measured over a 12-month period. The authors have previously described an early discharge service that reduced the length of hospital stay for older patients and also improved their physical and mental health. In this study, the effectiveness measure was the EuroQoL EQ-ED score, from which quality-adjusted life years (QALA) were calculated. Cost-effectiveness was calculated as cost per QALY gained. The study shows that, despite the intense home input from the EDRS, this was cheaper than routine care (£8,361 compared to £10,088). Thus, there is a high likelihood that this service is cost-effective. (RH).
