Annotation | In 1999, the UK Secretariat of the United Nations (UN) International Year of Older People (IYOP) brought together a wide range of agencies working with older people to form the Learning Through Life steering group. This group, representing a wide range of agencies working with older people, agreed on the usefulness of developing a multi-purpose tool showing how to draw together information about learning opportunities for older people in any chosen locality. This is a revision of the materials first devised by Jim Soulsby, written by NIACE, and developed with the steering group; it was also revised for use in Wales. The mapping exercise will highlight what learning opportunities already exist in a locality. If opportunities are not available, this toolkit illustrates where such learning activities could be created. The results could also be used to raise awareness of learning providers and give them greater understanding of why some older people are not engaged in educational activities. The document includes a checklist of agencies and their possible provision. NIACE is seeking feedback from mapping, for which a user questionnaire is included. (RH). |
