Annotation | Looking at the situation of a country's ageing research - in this case Germany - is challenging in many respects. One of these challenges is to condense the wide variety of ageing research in one country down to the essentials of developments, achievements and possible shortcomings. This article identifies five major growth factors in German gerontology since the 1980s. First, growth in institutionalisation of ageing research and education in gerontology. Second, growth and consolidation of major scientific areas contributing to gerontology. Third, growth in empirical research, multidisciplinarity and international co-operation. Fourth, growth in the generation of research perspectives and findings with international impact. Lastly, the growth in communicating ageing research to international audiences. Given the lack of a nationally co-ordinated ageing research programme, the German Society for Gerontology and Geriatrics is likely to assume this role. (RH). |
