AnnotationFollowing its research programme on "Transitions after Fifty", the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) has produced a framework to aid discussion of how changes in policy and practice can contribute to sustaining working lives. This is one of five discussion papers available from the Foundation's website, and focuses on flexible working arrangements for carers as part of the framework. It draws on information from the European Social Fund (ESF) Equal Community Initiative Programme (EQUAL project) led by Carers UK. It describes the EQUAL project, the importance of combining paid employment with caring responsibilities, and the barriers to remaining in paid employment while caring. What is know about what helps retain carers in work is discussed, as is the business case, also short-term and long-term solutions. (KJ/RH).
