AnnotationThe small-scale study summarised here explored the meaning, expectations, attitudes and behaviour towards planning for care in old age of a group of middle-aged South Asian people in three locations in the East Midlands. The focus on two main communities - Gujarati Hindis and Bangladeshi Muslims - explores their perceptions of ageing and their attitudes towards financial planning for care in old age. 64 participants (men and women aged 40-65), 32 from each community took part in focus group discussions and in-depth face-to-face interviews. Participants were unanimous in their assertion that the government was legally obliged to support them as taxpayers, though they acknowledged that government may not provide the level of support they felt was both needed and owed. Overall, the study underlines the need for policymakers to rethink their approach to care provision in minority ethnic communities. (RH).
