AnnotationHelpAge International (HAI) was established in 1983, since when its involvement in Africa has been based on Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) methodology. This paper outlines six key areas of HAI work that has been informed by research in Africa: addressing the needs of older people at community level; responding to the needs of older people in emergencies; addressing the nutritional situation of older people; addressing the violation of older people's rights; responding to the impact of HIV/AIDS on older people and their families; and the case for cash transfers to poor communities. Gaps in knowledge are highlighted. This paper was first presented at the conference, "Research on Ageing, Health and Poverty in Africa: Forging Directions for the Future", hosted by the Oxford Institute of Ageing, 11-13 April 2005.
