Annotation | The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has co-ordinated and seeks views on this Government strategy on how the future needs of people aged 50+ can be met. The document provides an overview of demographic trends, and sets out proposals for three priority areas. The first is increasing the post-50 employment rate and the average retirement age, and offering support for older people to improve their work skills; the proposed age discrimination legislation is also mentioned. The second relates to active ageing, covering issues such as transport, learning, leisure, housing, personal safety, and influencing local decisions. The third concerns services that promote well-being and independence. The document outlines how central government intends to deliver this strategy and improve interactions with local authorities. An Observatory on Ageing for sharing knowledge about ageing issues is also proposed. The second volume, "A social portrait of ageing in the UK", draws on research and statistics to present a snapshot of key evidence on ageing: changing lifestyles and household composition; personal and financial well-being; employment and activity in retirement; the importance of social networks; transport; and health and care.
