AnnotationThe Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) research programme, Transitions after 50, was established to explore people's experiences, decisions and constraints as they pass from active participation in the labour market towards a new identity in later life. This report examines the role of older volunteers in the context of an ageing population, increased life expectancy and growing government interest in notions of active ageing and community involvement. While the main focus is on "what works" in relation to older people's involvement as volunteers, also important are those factors that work against involvement and the steps organisations have successfully taken to overcome such barriers. This report comprises a review of the existing subject literature, detailed case studies of 11 organisations that involve older volunteers in their activities, in-depth qualitative interviews with 21 volunteers drawn from the case study organisations, and face-to-face interviews with 21 national stakeholders active in the field of older volunteering. Key themes include the motivation, recruitment and management of older volunteers, which are the focus of the study's conclusions and recommendations. (RH).
