AnnotationThe relationship between vascular risk factors and white matter hyperintensities in patients with mild cognitive deficits is explored. Preventrical and deep white matter hyperintensities are differentially influenced by vascular risk factors. The identification and control of modifiable risk factors could have important implications in the primary prevention of cognitive impairment. Findings are based on a study of 177 patients (mean age 69.7) assessed in the Memory Clinic at Leicester General Hospital between April 1998 and October 2000 who had undergone a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. Of the risk factors investigated, only age and prior cerebrovascular disease were significantly associated with severe preventricular white matter lesions. Age, hypertension and diabetes were significantly associated with severe deep white matter lesions. (RH).
