Annotation | Community Care has launched a campaign to put social care on the political agenda in the run-up to the general election in 2005, and older people is one of four themes for its election briefings. This briefing begins by stating that all political parties are being advised not to ignore the "grey vote". The author considers reasons for the negative views on ageing as "a problem", the endemic nature of age discrimination in society, and how public policy fits in with the ageing agenda. Aspects of government policy under New Labour are examined: health and social care; extra care; independence and support; financial security; work and retirement; and rights and discrimination. The likely content of a green paper on adult social care due for publication in March 2005 is anticipated. What is known of Conservative and Liberal Democrat policies is also outlined. Seven key recommendations are made: challenge ageism; deal with people's needs in ways that understand diversity; focus on implementing new models of care; tackle the pensions crisis; stop viewing ageing as a problem; help people to live healthy lives and encourage them to take responsibility for their well-being; and make "choice" a reality for all.
