AnnotationEducation has largely been missing from the debate on the effects of population ageing on employment and the workforce in the UK. This collection of papers reviews the implications of demographic change for policy-makers, education providers and for the workforce. Tom Schuller's "Demographic challenges: family structures and ageing" gives an overview of the impact of demographic change on everyone, while the remaining contributions look at the impact on older learners in particular. In "The age of choice: a new agenda for learning and work?" Stephen McNair highlights differences in freedom of choice and action for different cohorts of older people in deciding the balance of work and "non-work" in their lives. Four local case studies in Manchester, Warrington, Cheshire and Church Stretton, Shropshire are used to examine how far provision is being used to accommodate older people in Judith Summers' "Fit for purposes: do policies and planning work for older learners?". Next, Jim Soulsby reviews the work of NIACE's Older & Bolder campaign. Alan Tuckett concludes with "a modest proposal" for the Secretary of State for Education and Skills on things that could be done quickly to put older learners' needs on the policy agenda. (RH).
