Annotation | While most older people are able to care for themselves and live fairly independent lives, there are sizeable minorities in Europe (25% to 30%) of those aged 70+ who have health problems and require some assistance with their activities of daily life (ADLs). Supporting independence in old age with appropriate and adequate social care are both essential and interdependent. Nigel Appleton outlines examples of housing provision that can assist in these respects. This paper was given at a conference in July 1995 in Adelaide, South Australia on "Portraits of Planning".
