AnnotationThere is a widely held perception that the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Care is a training course leading to a qualification. The overall aim of this research was to investigate whether the NVQ has the potential to improve the quality of care, and to enhance vulnerable older people's quality of life. The research investigated: the care needs of highly dependent older people; the training and competence of care staff to meet residents' health and personal care needs; and workforce issues such as recruitment, retention and motivation of staff. There is a summary of this thesis in the format of a PSSRU Research Summary no 31. (KJ/RH).
