Annotation | Mental health problems can be both a cause and a consequence of social exclusion. This report highlights the centrality of mental health to the public health agenda in the context of the forthcoming White Paper, "Improving health". The Social Exclusion Unit identifies five main reasons why mental health problems too often lead to and reinforce social exclusion: stigma and discrimination; low expectation; lack of clear responsibility for promoting vocational and social outcomes; lack of support in work; and barriers to engaging in the community. The report features case studies of local projects illustrating the role of health, social care, and services such as housing, transport and support for carers. It concludes with an action plan, which relates only to England. (RH). |
