AnnotationSocial services have a leading part to play in supporting carers, having a responsibility for undertaking assessments of carers alongside those they care for. This report presents the key findings of a survey carried out between October and December 2003. Using the networks of organisations that are members of Wales Carers Alliance, a postal questionnaire was sent to some 10,000 carers. This report focuses on the detailed examination of 1,276 completed questionnaires from 970 female and 306 male carers, which also represent all 22 local authority areas in Wales. The report presents profile information on the carers, those they care for, access to support, and topics covered in carers' assessments. Recommendations are made concerning staff attitudes towards carers, on a carer's wish or need to work, and on improving funding to meet carers' needs. (RH).
