AnnotationHow can we begin to understand how it feels to have dementia? The author suggests the seven access routes in Tom Kitwood's "Dementia reconsidered" (1997): reading accounts written by people with dementia; listening carefully to what people say in interviews or group work; listening carefully and imaginatively to what people say in the normal course of life; watching behaviour and actions; speaking to those who have recovered from dementia-like diseases; using our poetic imagination; and using role play. The author adds a suggestion of his own: studying the results of creative and expressive arts therapy. (RH).
