Annotation | In a study of all patients newly referred to a West London geriatric psychiatry service, uptake of services by older patients of Polish origin was compared with that by indigenous older patients. 12% of all referrals were of Polish origin, a considerably higher proportion than the 4% of all community-dwelling older people who are of Polish origin in Ealing. There were no differences in clinical, demographic, social and service utilisation characteristics between Polish and indigenous patients with a few exceptions. Older Poles were more likely to be married, while indigenous older people were more likely to be single. Older Poles were more likely to be advised to take out power of attorney, and were also less fluent in English. Newly referred older Poles accessed and utilised the geriatric psychiatry services and social services at least as equitably as indigenous elders. (RH). |
