Annotation | This brief article considers the negative media coverage which focus on older drivers, especially if involved in accidents. The authors considered 51 relevant articles from 15 UK and Irish national and regional newspapers from January 1999 to May 2004. They made a judgement that 17 articles were found to be negative, 4 positive and 30 were considered balanced in their reporting. Negative headlines used were considered particularly distorting in their portrayal of the older driver. It is considered essential for general practitioners to be mindful of such distortion when discussing the driving ability with an older patient, so as not to prematurely curtail such a valued skill. Practitioners should wherever possible promote the needs of the older person to remain mobile, and that often with respect to public transport this is difficult. (KJ). |
