Annotation | Articles are based on a satellite symposium, "Modeling effective treatment of psychoses in the elderly: a focus on avoiding movement disorders", sponsored by AstraZeneca, that took place during the International Psychogeriatric Association's eleventh international congress. The first article "Caring for the whole person: integrated health care for older adults with severe mental illness and medical comorbidity", by Stephen J Bartels, examines treating the older patient as a whole person by integrating medical and psychiatric care. Sanford Finkel presents a neurobiological perspective on antipsychotics in his article, "Pharmacology of antipsychotics in the elderly: focus on atypicals". Richard M Trosch, in "Neuroleptic-induced movement disorders: deconstructing extrapyramidal symptoms", provides a review of the risks of movement disorders associated with the use of antipsychotic treatments. The treatment of movement disorders in older people is also the subject of the final article, "Optimizing atypical antipsychotic treatment strategies in the elderly" by Ira B Katz. (RH). |
