Annotation | Prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the US is increasing, most prominently in older people. In this cross-sectional study, 80 subjects with CKD Stages III and IV not requiring dialysis and 80 subjects with CKD Stage V on hemodialysis (end-stage renal disease - ESRD) (mean age 62.5), there was a graded relation between cognitive function and severity of CKD. The study's findings are based on results using three standardised cognitive tests - the Modified Mini Mental Examination (3MS), Trailmaking Test B (Trails B), and California Verbal Learning Trial (CVLT) - and the six-variable Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation.
