AnnotationNotions of adult ageing as they affect older people's lives and their social and personal identities are critically assessed. Drawing on a wide range of theory, original research and empirical sources, the contributors examine the idea that to understand contemporary ageing, it is necessary to recognise its diversity. Some of this book's chapters were first tried out at the 34th European Behavioural and Social Science Section of the International Association of Gerontology in Bergen, Norway in August 2002. Each chapter begins with four points and four further references that the author considers to be key. The book is arranged in four sections: individual pathways; social identifications; migration and otherness; and the last section, on structure and agency, considers themes such as lifecourse events, quality of life and social inequality.
