Annotation | In research on diversity of old age, regional divisions are frequently neglected. This study is based on the authors' work in the context of the European Union (EU) project MOBILATE: Enhancing Outdoor Mobility in Later Life, conducted in 2000 in urban and rural regions of five European countries (Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary and Italy). The data collected enable us to compare older people's living conditions in respect of personal resources and environmental conditions prevailing in these areas. The randomly chosen sample included 3950 people aged 55+, disproportionately stratified according to gender, age and region. Standardised questionnaires were used to assess the essential features of the community and various aspects of life that are important for autonomy and well-being. Findings revealed similar impact of basic human conditions and satisfaction with life, but diverging explanatory power of environmental conditions between and within European countries. Among the conclusions is that the impact of urban versus rural regions constitutes a complex matter in cross-cultural research still far from being fully understood. (RH). |
