Annotation | In 2004, the White Paper, "Fairness for all: a new Commission for Equality and Human Rights" (Cm 6185) expressed the view that fairness for all is the basis for, among other things, the effective delivery of public services. This NAO report examines the challenge of delivering public services, fairly and effectively, to a diverse community. It considers the needs of customers in six recognised areas of diversity: disability, gender, race, religion and belief, age, and sexual orientation. It sets out how the Government has sought to achieve diversity in service delivery, by legislation, cross-government co-ordination activities and other efforts. The NAO's examination included a major survey of 131 bodies, as well as a more detailed review of selected government initiatives and international practices. Recommendations are made based on high level principles of good practice. A second volume comprises case studies relating to "good practice" service initiatives of four government bodies: the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Inland Revenue, Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the National Gallery.
