AnnotationIn the last thirty years, the labour market participation of people aged 50+ has decreased, particularly among older men. In recent years, employment rates have risen again, although they have not reached 1970s levels. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) commissioned this survey among people aged 50-69, to identify what factors encourage labour market participation and influence labour market withdrawal in this age group. Specifically, it examines the impact of factors such as health, caring, income and assets, pension provision, qualifications, and occupation on continued labour market participation. The research also explores whether people intend to move gradually from work to retirement, and the characteristics of a group of people who report they are "semi-retired". The extent and nature of any voluntary work carried out is also examined briefly. The sample of 2,800 was selected from two different sources: respondents previously interviewed for the Family Resources Survey (FRS), and a boost sample of people in receipt of Incapacity Benefit and/or Income Support, selected from benefit records.
