Annotation | Older people are more likely to vote and participate in the community than the younger generation. However, their ability to participate can be restricted by poor provision of services, a lack of income, age discrimination and social exclusion. This policy statement comments on these issues, and on the benefits and barriers to volunteering. It notes that people aged 50+ already make an unpaid contribution of £24 billion to the economy, but there is a potential for an even greater contribution, if obstacles to preventing older people from active citizenship were removed.
