Annotation | A consequence of population ageing is an increased need for demographic information on the older population, and this presents new challenges for data collection. This article analyses several key aspects of data collection on older people, including survey design and questions. It also critically examines the current range of UK and international sources for longitudinal and cross-sectional data on older people. The author notes the under-representation of the following groups in some UK statistical sources: older people in institutions; the oldest old; and older people from ethnic minorities. This article is based on the author's presentation at the meeting, "Data needs for planning an ageing society", co-organised by the International Longevity Centre (ILCUK) and the British Society for Population Studies, held in London on 26 April 2004.
