Annotation | The identification of syndromes should aid research into the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia ((BPSD). BPSD were assessed in 435 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) (mean MMSE 13) using the Neurophsychiatric Inventory (NPI). Principle component factor analysis was carried out on the composite scores of the 12 symptom domains to identify four behavioural symptoms (factors): affect, physical behaviour, psychosis, and hypomania. Of note was the observation that agitation, aggression and irritability cluster within a depressive symptom factor, and apathy is found within a physical behaviour factor. (RH). |
