Annotation154 residents with medication problems and/or challenging behaviours were selected for case conferences by residential care staff, in this Adelaide, Australia study. Two multidisciplinary case conferences involving the resident's general practitioner (GP), a geriatrician, a pharmacist and residential care staff were held at the nursing home for each resident. Inappropriate prescribing of benzodiazepines was significantly reduced in the intervention group. However, the intervention had no impact on resident behaviour as measured by the Nursing Home Behaviour Problem Scale (NHBPS). Improved medication appropriateness was only seen in those residents discussed in the case conferences; no effect was seen on the medication appropriateness of other residents. (RH).
