AnnotationA census form was developed, piloted, refined and distributed to BUPA's 244 care homes in the UK. 15,483 forms (97% return rate) could be analysed: 25% of residents were "residential" and 75% in "nursing" care. Medical morbidity and associated disability rather than non-specific frailty and social need had driven admission in 90% of residents; more than 50% had dementia, stroke or other neurodegenerative disease; and overall, 76% required assistance with their mobility or were immobile. Use of the census form demonstrates the practicality of acquiring information on care home residents and their care needs. Alternatives to institutional long-term care should only be considered in the context of current resident profiles, the practicalities of providing alternative models and likely projected population needs.
