Annotation | The US stands on the brink of an unprecedented demographic shift. A significant labour shortage is predicted, precipitated by an ageing workforce, the retirement of the baby boom generation, lower birth rates, and fewer skilled younger workers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the proportion of workers aged 24-34 will increase by only 5% between 2001 and 2010, while at the same time the proportion of workers aged 55+ will increase by 46.6%. More than 25% of the working population will reach retirement age by 2010, resulting in a potential shortage of nearly 10 million workers. (RH). |
