KeywordsLoneliness ; Literature reviews.
AnnotationThe prevalence of loneliness has been investigated in several epidemiological studies, with the proportion of lonely individuals ranging from just a few per cent to 40%. This literature review notes the problems researchers have in conceptualising the subject, as loneliness can be interpreted quite widely. A large number of cross-sectional studies deal with correlates such as gender, marital status, widowhood, low income, and lack of a social network. However, despite 30 years of research, there are still gaps in the literature, including recognition of the problem by the health and social care systems. (RH).
