AnnotationThis paper draws attention to the phenomenon of "ageing with dependency", a challenge that has not been adequately tackled by Brazil's public health system. The paper also highlights the responsibility of the country's services for older people in providing the family with the basic conditions to assume caring for them. The themes of dependency and age are chosen for this analysis. As it is a dynamic process, dependency needs to be dealt with through programmes ranging from health promotion strategies to the establishment of a supporting network and long-term care in the community. Although Brazil has some initiatives in this area, it is not a co-ordinated effort. These programmes ought to be a part of an effective public policy that involves all social units and can support dependent older people, with or without family care. (RH).
