Annotation | This country study of Estonia is published as part of "Dynamics of Population Ageing in the ECE Countries" (DPA), a programme carried out by the UNECE's Population Activities Unit (PAU). The report presents a general background on the Estonia's demography. It uses data from the country's 1989 census to illustrate chapters on general trends and regional patterns of population ageing, living arrangements, work and retirement, income sources, migration patterns, and housing conditions. A final chapter on ageing policies outlines the pension system, health care, social and institutional care, and income maintenance. While the picture that emerges is of an ageing population, Estonia is notable for the absence of a post-war baby boom. (RH). |
