AnnotationThe authors describe how an exercise group for older people was set up in an in-patient intermediate care ward in a community hospital. Various challenges had to be overcome, such as hospital staff's routines, even though they had expressed concerns about patients' inactivity and the lack of focus on rehabilitation in preparation for discharge. This article outlines the context, how the project was planned and sessions organised, progress so far achieved, what has been learnt, and future plans for a flexible therapy programme that improves patients's confidence and increases the skills of the hospital staff involved.
