AnnotationThe significance of kinship is much debated in Europe amongst anthropologists, and is an issue of interest to grandparents, as is how they are addressed by other family members. The authors report on the use of empirical data from questionnaires completed by 49 people from 18 countries, all European with the exceptions of Israel and Ghana. They outline results on whether there is a general term for grandparenting in a country's language; the use of nicknames and diminutives; and whether there is specific terminology for step-grandparents. Geographical, regional, social class and age difference factors, along with differing attitudes associated with the terms for grandparents are also commented on. The authors note the general overall decline in the status of older people: grandparents are no longer automatically given respect and authority by virtue of kinship and age. (RH).
