AnnotationResearchers at the Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU) have completed three review reports on support services for carers, and this "Research Works" offers guidance for those involved in evaluating the evidence base, drawing on the lessons learnt. First, effective management of the review process is very important, with the need to have a review protocol and search strategy, and the ability to extract, organise and synthesise references. Methodological issues should be considered, including: assessing effectiveness; assessing cost-effectiveness; time constraints; and robustness of evidence. Quality appraisal using a generic set of questions and a typology of study designs is suggested. This enables policy makers and researchers to identify evidence that is "good enough" to inform decisions, and then to be able to note "gaps" in the evidence base. (RH).
