AnnotationCaregiving should be recognised as a public health issue, and should also be on the agenda for reducing health inequalities. These are the main findings of research based on interviews with people before, during and after a period of time spent caring, which shows that unpaid carers experience health inequalities compared with the general population. This pamphlet summarises the findings and recommends a more thoroughgoing approach to tackling carers' needs by those responsible for improving the nation's health. The research uses data from the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) for 1991 to 2000. The General Health Questionnaire was used to assess psychological distress. The full report has as its title "Health inequalities and informal care". (RH).
