AnnotationChanges relating to social functioning were assessed for 121 ageing Finnish municipal workers using the battery of interpersonal capabilities, personal behaviour problem statement scale, Lubben social network scale, social provision scale and UCLA loneliness scale. Also, the measurement properties of the scales were assessed. Responses were collected in 1992 and 1997 as part of a larger study. The reliability and the factor structure of the scales were analysed by computing Crohnbach alpha and carrying out inter-item correlation distribution analyses. Only few items worked poorly with the sample, and on the whole the scales were reliable. Mostly the factor structure of the scales appear multidimensional and the same factor structure could be replicated for four of the scales. Most of the scales can therefore be used in further studies as proposed by their authors, but users should secure sufficiently large sample sizes. The composition of the social network can be considered relatively stable, while interpersonal capabilities and loneliness were the least stable characteristics of these older workers. (RH).
