AnnotationOne of nine papers given at the Conference. The author is based at the Office for National Statistics. A consequence of population ageing is an increased need for demographic information on the older population, and this presents new challenges for data collection. The author examines the current range of UK and international sources for longitudinal and cross-sectional data on older people. She notes the under-representation of the following groups in some UK statistical sources: older people in institutions; the oldest old; and older people from ethnic minorities. Population ageing is a gradual phenomenon in the UK, and its socio-economic consequences will tend to appear gradually and with more predictability. (RH).
