AnnotationThe author is President of the British Society for Population Studies (BSPS), and his paper is one of the nine given at the Conference. His presentation provides an overview of existing population projections, and looks at their relevance to existing needs. While projections are made for households, marital status and labour force in the UK, there are no official projections for equally important sub-groups such as ethnic groups and health status. Population forecasts are indispensable in highlighting future policy issues, but equally inadequacies in data can lead to misrepresentation in their interpretation. (RH).
