AnnotationWhat makes a good care home? The White Paper, "Modernising social services (Cm 4169, 1998) identified a number of themes related to quality. The project on which this book is based was funded under the National Health Service Executive National Mental Health Programme. Researchers at PSSRU discuss the issues involved in studying older people's quality of life and quality of care in care homes; describe the study's design and methods; and use the baseline data to describe the 35 homes and their residents' health and quality of life. A staff questionnaire and the Sheltered Care Environment Scale was completed by some 440 staff, enabling assessment to be made of their experiences and of the culture of the care environment. The book also reports the views of residents' relatives, the analyses of baseline data concerning the relationship between residents' cognitive impairment and "interviewability", and the response of staff on depressive symptoms. The main recommendation is that homes should be required to provide staff whose sole responsibility is to provide activities for residents. Also, while quality care may not require huge investment, it cannot be done on the cheap. (RH).
